المدرسة الثانوية الأمريكية اليوم: أول تقرير يثير اهتمام المواطنين المعروف باسم تقرير كونانت، هو تقييم عام 1959 للتعليم الثانوي الأمريكي و 21 توصية، من تأليف جيمس كونانت.^[1]

خلال فترة عمله سفيرًا للولايات المتحدة في ألمانيا الغربية، رتَّب جيمس لِبدء دراسة مُكثفةٍ تُمولها مؤسسة كارنغي للمدارس الثانوية الأمريكية عند عودته. دُرِّسَت أبحاثُه في 100 مدرسة ثانوية في 18 ولاية في الفترة ما بين سبتمبر 1957 ويوليو 1958. وفي طريقها إلى أن تُصبح من أكثر الكتب مبيعًا، تزامن نشره لعام 1959 مع تغطية إعلامية كبرى، مع مقالاتٍ في: نيوزويك، يو إس نيوز آند وورد ريبورت. استنتج التقرير أنَّ المدارس الثَّانوية العامة الأمريكية يُمكن تَحسينها دون تغييرات جذرية.^[2]
