Weary of this fruitless warfare, Desmichel, thecommandant of Oran, hit upon the expedient of making a friend ofthe enemy; but in diplomacy, also, Abd-el-Kader showed his superi-ority. In the treaty concluded on February 26, 1834, he drew fromthe French general conditions that went far beyond the intentions ofthe government at Paris, and which allowed him quietly to establishand extend his sway more and more, and to create an efficient army.It was not long, however, before this seeming friendship was ex-changed for open war.
